Tuesday on my way to work I swung by the old Kaufmann Store in Lincoln Park. Truthfully, it's not that outstanding of building. In fact, I walked right past it the first time without recognizing it as a landmark. According the the plaque, it's one of the earliest surviving Louis Sullivan buildings. Perhaps that's the value of this landmark--that it shows have far Sullivan grew from his original, sort of 'typical' designs to his later masterpieces like the Carson building downtown.
If the door to the building is original, it does offer a little foreshadowing of things to come. It has a large porthole window that had to be unique in its time.
